What to Look for in an Entrance Door
An entrance door is one of the first things people will see when they enter your home. If you have an old, chipped, cracking entrance door, it doesn’t make a good first impression. It can also show your home to be a good potential target for burglars – not something you want to do! Choosing front entrance doors that are right for your home is the most important part of the process.
Think about what you want from your entrance door. What is important to you? This will change depending on the person. Some people will be really concerned with looks and will want a highly contemporary door that is going to look great and give their home a modern feel. Someone who lives in an old cottage may prefer a more traditional door and want it to be extra secure because they live out in the countryside. Make a list of the things that are non-negotiable for you and this will help you to find a door that is perfect for meeting your needs.
Shop around. Don’t buy the first entrance door you see. Spend some time browsing so you understand the market. You will get a good idea of what you can buy for your budget, and you will know what kinds of mechanisms you want. Do you prefer to have a slam shut mechanism for security? Do you want a particular type of handle? Are certain hinges more in line with what you need? Do you want a spyhole and security chain? And are there glazing patterns you prefer? Look around and work out what appeals to you the most.
Choosing a front door – discerning the quality
Make sure you thoroughly look into the quality of what you are going to buy. Don’t buy the first door you see – look at everything, from the hinges to the letterbox. If the door is branded, make sure it is a reputable brand that will give you a good guarantee.
Doors vary in price a lot. The most expensive door isn’t necessarily going to be the highest quality – it may be more aesthetically pleasing, use more glass etc., but it won’t necessarily be the best for you. However, buying a door that is cheap and seems too good to be true probably means that it is. Be cautious of any deal that sounds like it might not be realistic. The quality may well be lacking.
Where to buy your door
Look for a retailer you can trust. If you don’t want to hang your front entrance doors yourself, see if you can find a retailer who will also install it for you. The installation is important for the quality – a badly fitting door isn’t going to be secure, and it isn’t going to look as good.
Find a retailer that has a selection of doors, so you can choose from plenty of options. This will help you decide on what you want. A good retailer should be able to talk you through different option, explaining security features and door furniture to you.
